News & Events 6/14/2007 Benton Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Marilyn Fischbach Reading and Writing Grants. Benton County elementary teachers were invited to submit competitive applications for funding of projects or materials that will enhance the curriculum offerings in their classrooms. Through the generosity of private donors, all twelve applications were funded at a total of nearly $4,200. Several teachers throughout the county were awarded funds to enhance the reading skills of students at every skill level. Applicant’s requests ranged from classic paperback books to the Imagination Station online reading program for their classrooms. Those included in this category are Tracy Best (Boswell), Elaine McIntosh (Boswell), Margot Gobel (Prairie Crossing), Alice Thurston (Prairie Crossing), Kathleen McGinnis and Sharon Richards (Prairie Crossing), Penny Cooper and Karen Becker (Prairie Crossing), Sandy Callahan (Prairie Crossing), Debbie Johnson (Prairie Crossing), and Alyce Porawski (Sacred Heart). Boswell Elementary students will have fun learning using a classroom Jeopardy Game. Teachers Deb Shepperd, Gail Scherer, Carol Morris, and Jeff Brooks will be able to custom-generate curriculum specific questions or download teacher-created sets from the internet to help their third-sixth grade students study a variety of topics. Kathy Chase and Norma Wallpe were awarded funds to purchase Barnes and Nobles gift certificates for Fourth Graders at Otterbein Elementary. Those students who have reached all of their goals in the Accelerated Reading program will receive this unexpected reward for their hard work. Students of all grades and skill levels will enjoy playing Glockenspiels in Karen Gudeman’s Music classroom at Prairie Crossing. These percussion instruments teach left to right tracking and coordinated motor skills. These awards are a tribute to Mrs. Marilyn Fischbach who was an admired educator in our community and who truly enjoyed expanding the minds of our children. Benton Community Foundation is pleased to partner with our school systems in this effort. For more information about these awards or how you can donate to the Marilyn Fischbach Reading and Writing Fund contact Executive Director Ashley Bice at 765.884.8022.
